Favorite color combinations

Most of my garden is composed of all kinds of colors mixed together but occasionally I like to do a small area with 2 colors. What are some of your favorite color combinations?

I like dark purple (a la Ebb Tide) with orange or yellow but not so much with lavender.

I like soft yellow with pink

I love blue hydrangeas with red but my alkaline soil makes pink hydrangeas

I like the soft yellow with pink, set against of course the green of the foliage. I realized that I've subconciously repeated this combo throughout my garden...Tiffany next to a yellow lilac, Sir John Mills (pink) next to Renee Danielle (yellow). Climbing Cecile Brunner with black-eyed susans.

I don't actually have too many orange roses; they're often hard to blend. But I love seeing fiery orange and yellow blended roses right next to rich blood-red roses. Add a canary yellow to the mix and it's even better. Right now I've got the mini-flora Ingrid, and minis Caliente and Good Morning Sunshine all together in a bud vase on my desk. They look great! Sorry, I don't have a picture.

I love purples/blues with yellows/golds. Thus in one corner of the garden I have a couple Molineux, Gold Medal, and Golden Showers mixed with purple larkspur, lots of purple salvias, a couple blue-purple clematis, blue iris, plus several Happy Returns daylilies (yellow). Depending on what is blooming, a few other colors sneak in there from time to time (just to keep things lively), but the predominate colors are yellow and purple.

In another bed on the other side of the yard, I have a predominately red-white scheme--love the contrast. Reds include several Eutins, Crimson Bouquet, climber Dublin Bay, Braveheart, Home Run, a couple Double Delights, Scentimental, etc. Whites include some white perennials, the rugosa Blanc Double de Coubert (sp?), several mini Green Ice, etc. For some extra spice, some pale pinks and buffs/yellows occasionally pop up here and there--climber Eden, Queen of Sweden, climber Viking Queen, Elle, Valencia, plus the occasional yellows of Black-eyed Susan and Stella d'Oro daylily here and there. But the predominant effect is red-white.

My other beds have no particular color combinations, but I like the above beds better--a predominant scheme livened by some alternate colors.

    Pastel pink, yellow and lavender.

Brilliant, blinding orange contrasted with vivid violet (blue side of purple).

Cool pinks with ivory whites, various shades of pure blue and purple, and touches of silvery gray. All on a lush emerald green blackground.

Clear pink overnight scentsation against dainty white wrought iron fencing backdropped by a light grey house. Driveway leading up to the pinks a bright baby blue of plumbago and twining through it all a beautiful white cat, a rescued stray, whose shining blue eyes reflect the color of the sky.

    Orange with blue.

    Pink with peach.

But I really believe that it is hard to ruin a garden simply by failing to carefully match colors.

Varigated leaves blend in nicely with silver, white and green foliage/flowers.

I also like soft pinks as they match perfectly with the whites and purple/wine-red color like Falstaff.

In other words, I hate bold colors - I prefer soft pastel colours to create a dreamy/fantasy/romatic effect.

I learned a lot about colours through this website that was recommended to me from another forum if anyone's interested.:

I must admit, I still have trouble getting corals and oranges into the mix.

I like almost any combination more or less with the exception of reds combined with orange color or bluish reds with oraney reds.

Some really beautiful photos Ronda and harryshoe:

May I ask a question Ronda? Is that an echinacea picture after your 'Julia Child' and if so which one? That's really neat.

    Thank you.

Wow Harryshoe that honeysuckle is gorgeous. The roses are spectacular too.

Rhonda, I love that picture of the daisy.

I like all color combinations except pale pink with orange, and anything with red-orange.

Actually its an African Daisy. I got it at Home Depot and I believe it was a Proven Winners brand. No idea on the name but it might be the one in the link below.
