Globe Colorado Blue Spruce

Do any of you have experience with Globe Colorado Blue Spruce (not the standard), but the true variety (Picea pungens 'Glauca Globosa')? I'm in zone 7a/b - really on the line so I can claim both easily.

I'm digging (as in really, really liking) conifers ever since I planted some around my pond & have some in other areas around the place. I'm thinking of this one for my front entry re-do. And I would love to find some 'Crimson pygmy' Japanese barberry to plant around the spruce if I can find both. Any other ideas appreciated.

Never mind this post...I talked today with George Bennett who owns Bennett nursery in Huntsville about it and he doesn't recommend it for what I was intending to do with it and he explained why. It would be a good experimental plant as a single, but not something to hang your hat on for an entryway foundation planting that I'd want to be sure about for the next 10-20 years.

Excellent advice from George. You never want to put an 'iffy' specimen at the front door! Was he able to give you a suitable alternative?

Yes, he gave me several. I still haven't keyed in on THE one, but thinking about a cryptomeria as it needs to be deer resistant. I'm going to wait until I go to the show at the Civic Center this weekend. May contract with someone to do a redesign at the entry including a new pathway. I also have a JM I may have moved so there is more than just digging and replacing a few shrubs. Oy!! Thanks, rhizo! You have any recommendations along those lines (landscape designer)?
