Looking for un-boring bathroom vanity ideas

I am developing my basement and would like to know if I can use anything my heart desires for a vanity. I am installing a wall faucet and will be purchasing a vessel sink. Everything in the local Home Depot etc, looks soooo boring. I need to know what you think for ideas. I HAVE looked on this site but the things I see look extremely pricey to do. Ideas please!!

Hi Kay, I'm having the same problem. My 5x7 bathroom is just so bland already, and the only range in vanities I've seen is plain and ornate. :( How did your bathroom turn out?

Scout the used furniture stores, Goodwill etc. and you will find a piece that will be unique to your tastes with a little TLC

I would steer clear of HD for vanities ... Mostly junk or way over priced for anything custom. If you are prepared and able to do some work yourself then repurposing a piece of used furniture is a good option. I've turned an old stereo cabinet in to a vanity ... Took 7 coats of stain and clear coat on top.

Yeah, I was really disappointed with HD in that particular case.... I guess most people want something bog standard (if you'll excuse the pun). Thanks for the great idea about the stereo cabinet! (7 costs of stain!)

I was changing it from pine to mahogany look so had to add lots of coats of stain to get it dark enough. Plus to waterproof the counter it needs a lot of polyurethane protection. 5 years later still no water spots.
