We bought a 100-year old farmhouse in Mentone, Alabama two years ago. There was an old, overgrown apple tree that had not borne apples in several years, but it had apples the Spring after we bought the house! That year most of the apples fell off the tree too soon. I have no idea what variety they are; they are red.

I am really hoping to harvest many more apples this fall. Here are my main questions:

1. How should this tree be pruned and when?, and
2. What should I spray it with and when?

Thanks for your help! I've searched the Alabama Extension site, and although I found A LOT of apple info, it seemed to be aimed at commercial growing and/or putting in trees in a home setting.
