Mine overwinter fine in Bhm (had'em about 5 years). In fact they are blooming now. I've noticed they attract a HUGE moth right around dark. Don't know what it is but it's big.

Joel, it is a hummingbird moth that is visiting you. They are the adult form of the tomato horn worm. Thought you might like to know :-)

I grow several gingers in zone 7b, mostly Hedychiums, also a few curcumas and zingber zerumbet (shampoo ginger). I also grow a few that are not hardy in my greenhouse.

I don't know zones A & B line but I live in Rainbow City, a suburb of Gadsden.
Our ginger lilly stalks die down with the first frost but come back from the rizums every spring. Careful they spread rapidly. will fill your whole yard in a few years.

I love the hummingbird moths and regret that I didn't know what produced them years ago and killed many of the big old ugly caterpillars.

No more! I "sacrifice" a plant or two so I know I will have more of this little bugs fluttering around my blooms.

TedP2, Sorry, I didn't see your last post until today. I sent you an e-mail.

I didn't want to make a new post for my Q so I am posting on this old one. My Neighbor gave me a Ginger Lily. She does not know what kind it is and neither do I. I split it and planted it about 5 feet from the base of a LARGE Water Oak. (200 feet tall) There were no large roots in the ground. The area gets about 1 hour of direct sun and then about 3 hours of dappled sun a day. This post gave me some of the info I needed BUT I still have a couple Q's..

1) Is that enough sun??

2) Is it too close to the tree??

3) Can I put bloom booster on it or not?
