something pretty amid the ugly

news lately. i am still shaken by the tragic conditions created by katrina for our friends further south but found a temporary diversion from that yesterday as i walked the yard. these four-o-clocks and hedychium smell fantastic.

they were blown over during the strong winds but are beginning to grow upright again.

the plain, old maypop (passiflora) is really beautiful upon close inspection. it is the host plant of the gulf fritillary butterfly.

rose 'felicia' is very fragrant and reblooms off and on from spring through fall. the individual flowers are just under 2" each and are borne in clusters.

hoping for the best for forum folk who did not fare as well as we did here.

I think we all are shaken by the tragic circumstances of our friends to the south. It hurts to look, so I'm doing what I did after 9/11, and just don't watch much on TV about it right now. And we will concentrate on cleaning up the very minor debris/limbs in the yard and gardens this weekend. Thank you for posting some beauty to remind us that there will always be something to look forward to after a storm. I also hope we hear soon from some of our Alabama Gardeners around the Gulf.

Very pretty Jeff. Love the white four o'clocks and the roses too.
I have a friend in Panama City that I haven't heard from. Tried calling and emailing her with no results. Does anyone know if PC lost power and phones during Katrina?

My cousin lives in PC, and was in Pensacola yesterday. She didn't mention any problems there from Katrina.

Finally heard yesterday from my friend in PC. She and family are fine, but had been busy helping another of her friends who had lots of damage from the storm, closer to the coastline.
