Can you add trim on all four sides to add some bulk and visual interest to them?

I am a big fan of Miratec. You could easily block out post and make them 8" square post. can't go wrong with big square post painted white.

I feel your pain. I, too, live in an area where the ground "shifts," because we not only have the clay, but also a fault line-I'm in TX, not CA, for the record. I built a small house almost twenty years ago, and my kitchen cabinets started out flush with the wall, and now there is about a 1/4 inch gap between them and the wall. Doors will fit too tight, and then things will shift and they will turn into swinging doors. Its a never ending battle.
That Miratec sounds like it would be durable, but it would still move, too. Perhaps it would withstand it better and not crack, etc. from the stress. I don't think they make that claim-mostly that it holds up in different weather conditions, which is certainly desirable, too.

Thanks to Emily, Doug, and Lucinda. I'll check out Miratec. It would be helpful to hang trim from porch ceiling around the post to hide the movement of the porch. Lucinda, I know what you mean about a never ending battle. I'm "balancing" water content in soil by how easily the bedroom doors open. Kathleen.
