Too much

Yep. I've done too much. And I've still got so much left to do. I should have spread this out over 3 years instead of trying to get it all done this year. That's my only regret.

And when planting time comes, ooh, boy.

Do you feel in over your head? Or have you shown considerable restraint?

Yes and I thought I did. However, I could be much worse. :)

I have yet to join the 100+ club, but with almost 70 containers . . . them's a lotta plants! :) Plus, I haven't started on tender annuals, and I have at least six kinds of cosmos not to mention verbenas, nicotiana, marigolds, zinnia, salpiglossis, morning glories, herbs, and veggies, and I don't know what else. Plus, I still want to plant multiple containers of a few more perennials and hardy annuals. Why? Because I can and I am CRAZY. :)

Yes, when planting out comes--boy howdy! I would like to have a little plant sale, but I shudder at the work that would take, too. However, more $$ for seeds and Promix. Hmmm.

    cheers,

I feel better this year than I did last year with over 400 containers. This year should be closer to 200. I will still be overwhelmed when planting out comes.
I mean to do a lot more direct sowing and that's how the numbers got cut in half, lol.

Oh, I have plenty of direct sowing plans too.

Was feeling pretty good until a stroll through my gardens this morning. Lots of tiny green popping through the soil. At first the feeling was - oh wow - there is more already in here than I thought (all those tiny perennials I planted last year that didn't bloom but will this year and that got "lost" in the cover of robust annuals last summer). So that feeling quickly turned to "oh no" - WHAT will I do with the 140+ containers I have going (with more to come..)and where will I find some free dirt space?

But I'll figure it out. Trying to stay optimistic. Hubby reminded me that I had one particularliy stressful day last planting out season that I ended in tears - -"There just isn't enough ROOM, WHY did I start all these?" but I resolve not to go there this year. I will just pot up perennials if I run out of room and make some decisions in the fall.

Man, im still waiting to see 1 sprout, let alone too many! I hope to have the same problem tho! Ive been telling everyone ill have plants for them... hope i do! I keep trying to visualize my magnificent garden! :)

Well, even though this is my first year WS, I do some variation of this every year. . .

In winter, I can't wait to get outside, so I hatch BIG plans for new beds, expanding the veggies, laying a path, etc. I start to buy things - just collect here and there when I see them.

Then, St. Paddy's day comes, when I usually plant out my peas and greens, and I run out the door -ready to clear the garden of winter debris, early weed growth, get those seeds into the ground, AND get some sort of trellising up - all before the kids get home from school.

    Yeah - no.

So, that's my early spring wake up call and I then start to bargain with myself - "ok, this year the most important thing is the path from the driveway to the deck. And getting the strawberries in. Everything else will just have to happen slowly. . . "

At least this year, I have the motivation of healthy seedlings to keep, me going. . . In the past it was all of the plants that followed me home, and I felt like the clock was ticking like a time bomb, to get them out of those small containers before I killed them with neglect. Hopefully the tiny babies will keep me motivated without the fear!

I didn't think my 70 or so containers would be a problem because only the lettuce and broccoli had sprouted even though others in this zone had some flower sprouts. So pessimist that I am I figured I wouldn't have much success with the flowers.

Yesterday I noticed three different types of malvas had some sprouts now I'm looking at all the containers and thinking what if... Lots of work ahead if they all sprout, not to mention I've still got some more seeds to do not to mention the direct sowing of cukes and beans and corn, but that's for much later.

This is my first year winter sowing and only my second year gardening. I've shown no restraint. I've actually winter sown lettuce and some herbs before even building my raised beds for my kitchen garden. LOL. I also have many other veggies and herbs yet to sow. I am certainly going to have many more flowers than I can possibly use. I am trying to keep it low pressure though. This activity kept me busy during this time when there isn't much in the way of gardening to do. If I get some plants out of it--great. I am not going to obsess....I am not going to obsess... LOL. Yeah, right.

definatley did too much...but I have to wait till april or may to plant out so my concern is are they going to make it in the containers?

I also have many I planted last year that did not bloom yet. Coneflowers is one. I wonder how many new things I will see before the sprouts get bigger?

I also have tenders left to sow. The gardens better be full this year!

Continuing the tradition, I'm working on my annuals now. I really restrained myself here. No, seriously. I only did 36 six packs and 48 8/9 ounce cups. That's restraint in my opinion.

lol that is some restraint you have there :)

I just got a pile of milk jugs from a neighbor last night now I have to resist filling them all till it is safe to sow tenders.

I don't feel over my head yet, as I only have three things sprouting. :) But boy, if these all come up then yes, I am going to be in big trouble! LOL

One of the first things I learned from reading posts on this forum is that restraint and winter sowing used in the same sentence is a contradiction of terms!

I am very new to winter sowing and because of a serious fall I have had to limit the number of containers that I sowed this year. So I donÂt feel overwhelmed yet. I am very lucky to have a helpful hubby. He does not know yet that this is an addiction (and that I am hopelessly hooked).

This is the first year I've planted perennials.
I haven't even started annuals, and I've got tons of seeds to sow.
I like growing vegies for other people, cuz I don't have to worry about where will they go, I just get to enjoy the greenery.
One of the community gardens where I was going to put some overflow - particularly the perennials - is going to be closed, :So I can expand into spaces around the building where I live.

So I don't feel overwhelmed, just a little anxious about all the sowing yet to do.

Token, do you have one,or two, seeds in each cup? Or more?
I used the cups last year for my tomatoes and peppers, but have wanted to try using them for flowers as well.
Seems it would be much easier for planting out?

Way too much here too. This is my first year doing seeds and I've gone crazy. Between WSing and GUL I'm already swamped and can't stop. Many jugs out, sunroom full of baby plants, and rack in basement overflowing.
My existing beds are pretty full already but I can squeeze a few more in. Can't make any new beds cuz I have more than I can take care of now. I'm already begging people to say they'll take some. The panic will really set in when it comes to planting time. Oh well, it sure has been fun.
See you all later, must go now and WS some annuals.

Carol, it really just depends on the seed. Some have 3-4, others have a half pinch (petunias). I know that I can divide those later when I plant them out. Even in the Pride of Barbados cups, I put at least 3 seeds. I don't always trust that only one seed will germinate and I hate to waste soil.

Well, I'm definitely in way over my head. Am totally anxiety ridden the last couple days exacerbated by a family matter.

I'll just take it one day at a time and do the best I can. But when I look at all those containers out there, it doesn't give me a "feel good" feeling any more. And I still have some annuals to sow, at least not quite so many, may only sow half of some of those and save the rest for another time.

I don't know why I went overboard like I did, had a lot of seeds from saving and ordering last fall, then went on a total binge. I can't seem to do anything half way.

Let me see--do I feel like I'm in over my head? YUP! Did I exercise restraint? You be the judge: I was going to WS 12 half gallon milk jugs. My current count stands at 378 gallon milk jugs and a few 2 liter bottles. No sprouts so far but if all the seeds germinate I'll have enough plants to fill every flowerbed in the neighborhood.
I do have a donor list of family, friends and neighbors who'll be happy to take seedlings off my hands and could probably add names to it with people at work who I know love to garden so I'm not panicking just yet.
It has been a fun winter when it might easily have been a gloomy one so I have no regrets about WS so many containers. I've met some great people on this forum and traded seeds with many of them. In fact I have more seeds coming in the mail that will need to be WS--the number 400 isn't far enough off the horizon for comfort!!
Like Token, this should have been a multi-year project. Since I've already gone overboard, I'll just do the best I can and try not to get crazy trying to plant out and pot up the thousands of seedlings everyone says I'll get. Here's wishing us ALL luck getting that done! I've already identified the plants I don't like that will make room for new seedlings after I shovel prune 'em.

I went and am going a little crazy this year...haven 247 jugs and containers of perennials out, plus 288 cells I am experimenting with in the greenhouse. I still have to Winter Sow my annuals and veggies....I have so many cool seeds this year I can't wait, I am going to be a busy bee!!! The last 9 months have been very difficult and last week very sad losing my dear MIL....but winter sowing has keep my mind from venturing too much in dark places. I plan to plant a wonderful memory garden for my dear ones who have passed.

Not an iota of pity for you Token!! You LOVE this.

I will take all orphans I'll pay postage.

I went out and checked my gallon jugs. They seem so wet, no sign of anything. Early on when it said light sprinkling of vermiculite, I was doing that, but I don't like the stuff and switched to seed starting mix after something I read here. Some I didn't cover at all.

I'm hoping that vermiculite doesn't cause moss or fungus, am not using it for WS'ing any more.
