Where is Spring??

Don't know about anyone else, but I have the worst case of spring fever I think I've ever had. Guess it was due to the fact that we didn't have a fall here, got real cold, early, so Winter seems dragging on.

One bright note, it did warm up last week and I went down to the garden and planted some spinach and radish. Noticed the garlic rows had sprouted (French Music) so that's a positive note. I was concerned as it usually sprouts (planted in Oct.) before full winter sets in, but seems to have over-wintered fine.

I know I still have about 6 weeks, but all I can do for therapy is go out to the barn and work on stuff so I'll be ready.

We're supposed to be in an economic downturn or something? We've hit an all time high on seed catalogs this year. The stack is over a foot high and growing. Wonder if that has anything to do with the cost of seeds these past few years?

Enough nonsense.

Hey Exmar,

Don't despair, spring always comes around. It's been tough here in NJ this winter. Worst snow we've had in my 54 years. I have garlic in as well and haven't been able to check it because of the snow/ice. Guess it's well protected.

Out here in the southern Rockies of northern New Mexico we have had brutal cold at times but hardly any snow. You may be looking forward to Spring, we are dreading FIRE SEASON. Our local ski area is usually open weekends from late December thru March and into April. This year they have been open three weekends in January and one weekend in February so far. Snowpack? About 40 % of normal. (Here in the west snowpack fills resevoirs for summer irrigation of farm crops, and also recharges ground water. Many/most communities pump their municipal water from ground water supplies.) All in all, the weather is a lot like 2000, when a May fire swept through our town, burning 400 homes and 47,000 acres in the area. Kinda scary.

OTOH, my garlic looks good, if a bit dry. My potato onions died back to the ground during our cold snap last month, but I have high hopes that they will recover. Sure miss the usual snow mulch!

Catherine, Sounds like you live in a fascinating, albeit challenging area!! Interesting observation about Snowpak, something we don't really think about here in the East. I do recall that the "old timers" used to sometimes talk about "winter drought" when we had a dry winter, predicting poor crops the next year. Obviously the aquifer has to be recharged and they felt the best way was from melting snow as opposed to rain which could just run off.

I live on a section of the family farm I grew up on, returned here 10 years ago and built house, barn, root cellar, etc. What I've been wondering is "where are the creeks?" I'm in my 60's and as a kid here, we had cattle, and there was adequate water in the creeks for them. Now, the "creeks" are essentially dry except during heavy rain. Weird?
