Hi there. Interesting experiment! I've always planted garlic cloves in the fall so I have no direct experience here.

It seems logical that garlic rounds can produce bigger cloves because you're planting them in early spring at the mid-stage of their growth, giving them significantly more time to develop larger bulbs before die-off. Fall-planted garlic, as you know, is just getting started in early spring and slowly approaches its biggest round stage in summer.

Spring-planted cloves will more likely end as rounds because they don't have enough time to separate into new cloves.

I'm going to try your method and plant some cloves. I grow 9 different kinds, so it will be fun to see the results. Thanks for sharing!

What is a garlic round? Please tell. I planted some store garlic in the fall. It looks good, But I would like to plant more, BTW, I usually obtain garlic for planting from a garlic farm. I was not able to get any last fall so I thought I'd try some from the produce dept. - kim

Kim - It's the stage of development between the clove you planted and a resulting bulb full of cloves. Garlic goes from clove to rounded bulb to a final bulb separated into individual cloves, but it needs a full season to do this.

Planting a clove right now in the spring is probably just enough time to develop a rounded bulb before the plant dies down. As you know, fall planting that same clove would have given it time to become a rounded bulb, then it would split into cloves as the season progressed.
