People want miracles. So, there's lots of folklore and wishful thinking in gardening.

Instead, the magic bullet is healthy plants in the right site with appropriate care.

Thank you Jean001. I was hoping it was true. Oh, well... I love alliums, and whether they help to keep bugs at bay or not - they are always welcomed tenants in my garden.

We have been in our home for 30 yr. and have over 34 rose bushes. Under the rose bushes are planted, something in the garlic or onion family. I leave them in all yr. around. Whatever they are, I have not had an aphid on my roses all these yrs. You could try it on one or two plants and see what happens.

The bugs ignored my garlic entirely. But the canteloupe beside the garlic patch, and the volunteer potato that popped up in the middle of the garlic patch, were eaten to pieces by bugs.

For what it's worth....

Thank you Darlene and Lilacs. One of the good things about onion family is that rabbits don't seem to favor it. That's a big plus when it comes to choosing plants for me, since rabbits in my area have enormous appetites.
