Shantung purple, Chinese Pink and Xian are a turban types. We are growing Shantung and an other turban for the first time . Last year we grew Morado Gigante (turban) and it was harvested in May which is much earlier than the others types. We purchased it from Garlicsmiths and this is what they said about turbans "They are the earliest maturing of all garlics and need to be harvested immediately because the bulb wrappers deteriorate rapidly in the soil after maturity." Our's has had scapes for about for a few days so we will probably be harvesting in 1-2 weeks. I imagine yours won't be long till harvest.
Music is one of the first hardnecks we harvest and lorz Italian for us comes a little after Music.
We don't grow creole types anymore they don't do well for us. when we grew burgundy it was late.

I dug the Xian yesterday, and the results were a mix with about half of the bulbs 2-1/2" to 3" and the remainder 2" to 2-1/2".
I dug around to inspect the Shantung Purple and Chinese Pink and they don't look to be ready yet to me, even though the foliage is at about the same stage the Xian was.
My creole varieties' foliage all appear to have similar browning as the turbans but they aren't ready either.
They are in a raised bed, and it has been dry and breezy here for a while; there is moisture below about 3" deep but pretty dry at the top 3". Do you think it's too near harvest to give them a good watering?

When I set these out I didn't have a clue regarding maturity times. You can bet I'll pay attention and plant next fall so that I won't have to dig early varieties from within the later maturing ones!

My first season of growing garlic is about done, and I've reinforced the idea (in my mind) that you never really know what to expect!
I've harvested everything now except the Mother of Pearl and generally was surprised by the crop development.
The Music and Siberian were dug yesterday. I only planted a few cloves of each, but every one produced a fine bulb. I really didn't expect much from either variety but will definitely plant them again this fall.
I was expecting the creole varieties to produce better than they did and was very disappointed with the small bulb size. I'll probably try some of them again this fall.
The Xian and Shantung Purple produced pretty well and I'll try again with a few of them also. Some of the bulbs were a nice size.
