Quirkpod, it's possible that you're making this more complicated for yourself than is necessary. There's nothing really difficult or complex about growing alliums.

Plant a bulb, clove, seed or seedling, and stand back. That's 90% of it.

Sure, there are nuances and tricks of the trade, just as there are with any veggie. But by and large alliums are the most maintainance free plants going.

Alliums are so complicated that if they were given a chance, they'd take over the world! Elephant garlic and white pearl onions have been trying to do that in the South for over a century. They are even succeeding in some places! Often, the only thing truly complicated about them is obtaining them. And that's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. We may make it sound complicated but it's only to get better results. What else can you plant in virtually any month of the year and expect a nearly 100% chance of survival.

Thanks, all. I've narrowed down my confusion to the question: when does one plant the culinary Allium family and when does one harvest them? Are they annuals or perennials or biennial? Seeds vs. plants? I get conflicting info. Plant Onion seeds in Spring, but plant Garlic bulbils in Fall. I've decided to go to the library and get a good book on the subject, but meanwhile it's an interesting thread. I hope to get a good understanding of the Allium family lifecycle/big picture, so I can weigh my options. For instance, what would happen if I cut the top off a grocery store red onion and planted it? Well, I tried it, and it's growing! Sounds better than planting from seed, but is definately unorthodox from what I've gathered (or not gathered) so far.
