Pruning a nut tree

We inherited a walnut tree when we bought our home. When we first moved in about 7-8 years ago it was a fairly small tree and we had no clue as to what kind it was. Last year I noticed nuts, altho not many. Not being a nut eater I'm not exactly sure what variety it is, altho I think it's a walnut.

Our home is situated on a large corner lot and the tree sits on the side of the house, near the street. We were out picking and pruning a fruit tree in the same area and noticed that this sucker has gotten really tall. Almost like it exploded upwards this growing season. To be honest, we have never really paid all that much attention to this tree other than to prune it up a little.

What we noticed is that the top has grown very close to the power line that runs from the street lines to our home. Come this Winter I'm sure that it's going to be blowing against those lines which may or may not cause a problem.

In looking online on how to prune them I noticed that nothing I read said anything about pruning the leader down. Can or should this be done? If so, how short can we take it down?

I really want to be proactive before the bad weather hits. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanx!
