Well if you give yourself 22-24" just to stand at the stove, stand back, move a bit, then subtract the door swing, what does that leave you with? Having it right there will be convenient for being at the stove and needing to grab an ingredient out of the fridge. You know what your household is like, are people constantly in and out, grabbing beverages, hungry teenagers looking for a snack? Can they get in and out without risk of you getting bumped/burned? I'm thinking you may need another 8-12"

Thank you for your prompt response! It's just my husband and I. It's a mountain home with a view. Tried moving the cooktop on the end of the island and there is just a few inches on either side. So cooktop has to go on the side of the island facing the view. Can put he oven behind the range and fridge beside of it.That way the freezer door would be mostly behind it. But the refridg. side door will open very close to the corner of the granite counter top. I have a window on the other two wall spaces for view. Thanks agian for you responses.

My husband is an architect. You are paying that professional for his advice and expertise. I would go back to him with your concerns. There are always solutions and sometimes it might take three or four tries to get it right. Re-examine the entire space and maybe make other changes to accommodate a better layout. Good luck; the process is worth it.

Yes, a floor plan or picture would help, but 3'10" is plenty of space to operate the fridge and enough clearance behind it. But I wouldn't recommend a cooktop directly in line with the fridge.

Looks like space certainly isn't an issue with your site, why not make the aisle 4'6", which is the optimal amount you want without excess steps between the island and wall cabinetry.
