Do the heads still contain a single clove or have they divided into multiple cloves? If they consist of multiple cloves, I would think that they should be divided and replanted.

None of them have cloves, they are all single rounds, like onions.

All the information I can find says to dig up immature garlic rounds, let them dry out for a few months, then replant them. But none of them say WHY you have to dig them up. It would certainly be easier to just leave them in the ground, but if there is a good reason why they need to be out of the ground for 3 months, I will certainly do it.

No reason to dig them up. As anyone who has missed a few cloves knows, they will grow again just where you leave them nearly all the time. Of course, I live where the soil is dry, so rotting in the ground is not a problem for me. But if you have bulbs like tulips and dafodils in the ground in your region, that's a good clue that something like garlic will survive in the ground.

I am new to garlic, but I left some in ground last year by accident.

They did really well and were harvested this year.

I also found that potatoes left in ground, by accident, did way better then any that I have intentionally planted.
