Daylily sprouts!

I was beginning to wonder if any of my daylily seeds were going to sprout. I looked in the jug of 'Schnickel Fritz X Purple Pinwheel', and I saw two little green nubbies popping through the soil. Yeah! I crossed a few of my daylilies last year and winter sowed all of the seeds. Several of my other containers are showing signs of life, but none of the daylilies, except now. I hope the others will show me some love and start sprouting. Here are photos of the daylily cross that's sprouting:

Wow!! love them How do you cross them??? I have sprouts of a pink variety that I will be planting out and I have an orange variety already established. I also have a darker maroonish/brownish with orange center already established. Could I cross them??

    Hi Karen,

Did you soak your DL seeds in peroxide and all of that
work to get your sprouts, or did you direct WS??
I am curious, as I STILL have seeds in my fridge in peroxide
and H2O. Still no signs of life.

Your crosses are pretty, I love the purple one.

No soaking. Didn't know about doing that until I already planted them. So, I have to play the waiting game and see how many others will sprout. It'll be interesting to see what comes out of these two daylilies, hopefully a double with the purple's colors, but who knows until they mature enough to flower.

Crossing them is simple. I try to do it in the morning when the pollen is dry and fluffy, then I pick a stamen and smear the pollen on the tip of the pistil. Also, you want to do it early enough where the little buggies don't do it before you. Then you tag just below the base of the flower so you know what you crossed with what, but I didn't do that, I just crossed one daylily with another once, so I knew what I had. The peeps in the daylily forum can give you more in depth information. I just did mine as an experiment. But, I'm glad to see the nubbin's popping up. :)

Also, I forgot, you would have to know whether your daylilies are diploids or tetraploids, since generally the cross won't take if you try to cross a dip with a tet, or vice versa. Tets with tets, dips with dips.

I wintersowed daylily seeds too. Most were collected from Stella D'Oro and some unknown dark pink daylily. I sowed them all in the same container. I've had one sprout since early January. Others started appearing a couple weeks ago. I'm really excited to see what comes of them in a couple years.

Didn't clean or soak mine either. Just sowed them in December.

Me too. I found two sprouting today, parents newberry blue eyes and gordon biggs. Hooray. I WS with no special treatment. All the ones I traded for were fresh as far as I know. Meaning from last year.

Glad to hear you have sprouts! Still waiting to see sprouts on my 'happy returns'. I will indeed be happy if they show me some green.

Karen, your day lilies are just lovely! I especially like the cream one.
I have some daylilies seeds ( Stella D'or's ) sprouting in my jugs. I WSed them. No special treatment. I tried planting them in pots last spring and they did nothing till almost fall and then only one out of five pots sprouted.
