Lilacs, you can try floating row cover, shade cloth, etc. Floating row cover is pretty cheap. Or if you buy that shade cloth I told you about, you can reuse it in the spring/summer for your broccoli!

Lilacs, in the fall, I have problems in general with squirrels digging in my beds, but they're usually digging in their nuts. Come spring, they're digging looking for their nuts (sigh, I toss them as I find them).

I have found a clove here and there dug up, but I didn't notice them being eaten. Maybe your squirrels have a much more gourmet tastes over there? :)

Sorry, I have no idea how to keep squirrels away. Then again, I live in a borough called, "Squirrel Hill."

Lay chicken wire flat over the row. Also keeps cats from digging. The garlic will grow up through it or you can remove the wire once the garlic starts sprouting or in spring.
