Help For Boring Bedroom!

I've just finished purchasing furniture for my bedroom and it looks flat and uninviting. I think the problem is the bed and linens. Do I need to get rid of the bed (too close in color to the rug and walls?) If changing the linens would help - what colors (I have not been able to successfully choose) - patterns? solids? How can I make this room more inviting? (Note, last photo is really just to show colors in daytime - I no longer have the lamps, etc.)

I actually really like your bed and the linens you chose look great. You are right that the headboard is kind of lost against that wall color. Have you thought about maybe changing the wall color overall or maybe just on that back wall?

Thanks, Emily! I actually did think about it, but I feel so lost when it comes to decorating. Is it odd to have one wall painted a different color? And I'm not sure what color! I really like the color I have now, but the thought of returning the bed (and sleeping on the floor) - almost makes repainting worth it!

Thanks, Leslie, that's really helpful. People who have seen the room seem to feel I should go lighter with the bedding - not darker (like my current brown linens, dark blue pillows). But maybe if I changed the wall color, it wouldn't feel so heavy.

Have you thought about adding some type of focal point to the wall. I painted my back wall darker and added a round canvas print and then took some of the colours from the canvas and incorporated them into the room via candles, pillows etc. Some texture in the room would be nice as well, easy to do with pillows and throws.

Contemporary style looks great but is it really you? If you like the wall color, you may be happier with a wood bed which might take the room in a direction you'd be happy with.

I like your upholstered bed, but your bedding isn't doing it justice. I would also like to see your walls darker, or at least the wall behind your headboard.

I agree everything you have in the room works great together and would not change a thing. Also Leslie has a great suggestions of adding some personality and character with wall art.

Thanks, this is really helpful - looks like maybe I won't have to return the bed and sleep on the floor! Decoenthusiaste - I actually wanted a plain wooden bed, but couldn't find what I liked, and after months of looking (I have had a very hard time figuring things out and am doing my whole apt by myself) somehow ended up getting a plain fabric one, thinking it would essentially be the same. I feel a bit tied to it now because the thought of starting over looking for a new bed is not a good one.

Much easier to paint than to return furniture! I agree with the suggestions to create contrast with the headboard by painting that wall a deeper color. Brown and blue is a popular color combination, so it works so long as you like it. Because you're starting with dark brown and dark blue, you can lighten it up with accessories in lighter blue. What shade of blue suits you? Turquoise? Tiffany? Robin's egg? Simple accent pillows and a lamp shade can add sparkle. I also agree with the suggestion to add art above the bed like Dytecture posted; make sure you have some brighter blue and other color in the art but probably keep simple frames.

Wall decals could be great too. I'm thinking about either some lettering, or flowers/branches, or some patterns depending on what kind of "inviting theme" you'd like. I attach some pictures even if they are not all bedroom pictures, but that would look nice on top of your bed, and you wouldn't have to consider changing/returning furniture or painting your walls. Also, I agree with everyone and think that your room looks pretty nice as it is.

There is nothing going on above the headboard. This area is a natural focal point for most people, so I would add three of something overhead: 3 pictures or 3 mirros or a group of 3 sculptural items (such as metal sculpture, or anything with a 3-dimensional quality to it). Or, you could hang one large item such as a beautiful, curving piece of driftwood, which would go nice with your color scheme, and also offer some counterpoint to the straight, angular lines of your furniture and accessories. Just make sure you attach the driftwood in several places to anchor it securely to the wall, so it doesn't fall on your head in the middle of the night! I would also add a blue rug in a curved shape to your floor, in a blue color that matches the pillow on your bed. Your colors are very nice and soothing for a bedroom. I really think you need to add some soft, rounded items such as I described above to counter the sharp rectangles in the overall design.

These ideas are really great. I never really thought about these concepts. I was going for sort of a relaxing, calm look. But I found the room was so calm and neutral it was putting me to sleep! I actually added the blue pillows recently (very cheap) as an experiment to try and get some color into the room. Believe it or not, even though I realize this is neutral, I couldn't match any other color to my wall color and headboard (I brought swatches with me) but maybe switching out the blue for a slightly brighter color would make the room a bit more inviting? White didn't work and I tried orange and an eggshell blue - didn't look great (which surprised me). What am I missing? I could also try maybe a comforter with a pattern rather than always falling back on solid creme and brown or will that just make the room chaotic?

I think your room is crying out for some spectacular art on the wall. I wouldn't change anything else as the neutral feel would all point to the focal point above the bed. You need to find something you love. It could be a photo of scenery like trees in mist or something relaxing but impacting too. You could also change your wall art seasonally if you get bored easily. Then you could put some small touches like cushions, flowers etc, in colors that you've drawn out from your art work.

Hi! I'm not a designer, but I like the idea of 3 pieces of art. If you have trouble picking art (like me) you could do small cool looking mirrors like the Eq3 starburst below. I also think you are lucky because you could use the wall for fun wallpaper! I like a bold graphic in navy to bring out the pillows, but if you want something serene, the forest wallpaper is super cool too. There are lots of other options if you search wall paper on houzz. Definitely fine to do just one wall. Oh how I wish I had a nice blank wall like yours to do this on :)
