More work being done

Had a very busy weekend..

All my bare root roses are now in..

500 daylily seedlings are now in..

Started with more winter-sowing stuff..

Golden Marguerite, Blue Flax, Bellis English Daisy, Oxeyed Daisy, Glorisia Daisy and Garden Heliotrope are all out.. As is Pacific Beauty Calendula and Double Clarkia.

I have dozens more to go of course, but its a start..

Biggest project of the week was to expand garden beds , extended a walk wall into the boggy part of my garden, this will have siberian , japanese iris and hopefully some wintersowing goodies next year..

This took a ton of compost to raise the bed up about 10 inches from the ground.. also a load of rocks , I pulled alot of the woods again so It can have that, been there for awhile look.

Extended garden bed in front, this will have daylily seedlings, wintersown annuals and perennials and roses of course, still lots of stuff to do to finish it..

Not much blooming right now.. daffodils are all done, my few tulips that survived slugfest '10 are finishing thier bloom..

Have this pink rosylvia forget me not I sowed last year.. pretty color for early season, have some pansies, but thats pretty much it, sowed silver dollar seeds again to have something else to bloom early season next year..

WOW! Those Forget-Me-Nots are spectacular! You are right about the colour for this time of year. Very nice.

Looks like some great gardening spaces coming up. Do you have any deer issues where you are? I'm seeing the woods/forest and thinking 'trouble' is lurking in there. :O)

Yes, but its a little deceptive, I have tons of woods around me but this front garden is really restricted, they can come, but there is a road to one side , a bog to another and then the house.

I spray everything with a mixture of garlic, hot sauce and sometimes egg whites and beef bullion. Though just the garlic and hot sauce seem to work just as well by itself.

As long as I actually remember to do it, its fairly effective in normal years. If its a hard year, they will come anyways..

Nice job, Silverkelt. You must be exhausted.

Just curious, do the iris and lilies like the boggy conditions? I have an area in the front of my garden where water gathers after a storm and have had trouble keeping anything alive there -- when it rains hard the water can sit there for a few hours. I've had all kinds of things die there.

    Bearded iris does not..

specias, siberian, japanese will tolerate watery conditions, I raised this bed up 10 inches though, its still going to be fairly wet..

BTW joe pye weed, new york ironweed, pink turtlehead, garden heliotrope, astible, hostas, ligularia and a assortmant of other plants will tolerate wet conditions.

Any plant that says KEEP consistely moist, will do ok in wetter conditions. rare flooding conditions usually will not damage any of these plants. None of them will want to sit in water, but mixed organic matter like compost. BTW even Rosa Rogusa can withstand slight wet and flooding conditions, and salt and a slew of everything else.. Its a magnificant hardy rose to put where almost anything will not grow..

I also dug a drainage ditch to stop my front bed from being flooded.. Becuase I have some stuff that doesnt require that much moisture!

Been there, done that. The last load is the heaviest. I filled up and emptied the bed of my small truck 18 times in this yard. But the results are worth it. Looks great. Love the character of the woods. It will make a great backdrop to the flowers soon to come.
