I did a really neat shower treatment in a client's bath and to this day it is still one of my favorite bathrooms! I had a cornice board made that was about 21-24 " long and the width of the tub. Then I painted it white , antiqued it with a brown stain and then in the middle attached a wrought iron piece. This attached to the ceiling with L brackets. I did have to have custom panels made for the shower curtain and custom liner made also. The liner hide behind the drape panels and made the tub shower ready. Both the drapery panels and liner were hung on a tension rod just like a shower curtain would hang on. This could be adapted to your needs and likes but really makes a beautiful treatment. Beth, I used to be able to get custom shower curtain liners made for my clients by a shop, I believe in New Jersey, called the Surrey Shoppe, but last time I called them they said that they were no longer making them because of the high cost of plastic, so please do tell us who makes extra long plastic shower curtain liners?

Home owners who are out there reading this, please don't let your architect or builder put a12' ceiling in your shower area! It only creates problems. But for kflong, I sympathize and think that Beth's cornice board type treatment could help you solve your problem.

I have hung decorative panels from 10' high shower areas, with a standard 6' high rod holding a plastic liner 4' below it. The drama of the decorative panel (I usually just do one), with the plastic liner tucked in behind it, takes the eye away from the rod hung at 6'.

I have done the iron rod details, but have hung 12" below ceiling line. That looks really nice. I think I would be scared to hang at a 6' height. I have also used the cornice box detail, that is the best. Dependent upon the shape of the cornice, you can bring in a traditional feel or a more transitional feel.

The other thing that one can think about doing is adding a border detail to an already made curtain. This can be very elegant or fun, dependent upon the theme you are trying to achieve.

Thanks for the links to extra long shower curtain liners. That was very kind of you to provide them. However, they don't seem to go beyond 96" (8') long and with a 10' or higher ceiling, that just doesn't work since tubs are frequently only 14" high.

I suppose that with all the gorgeous outdoor fabrics available today, we could just use those for custom shower curtains. But I don't know if they're really up to everyday "rain". Maybe if we only made a shower curtain with a width of 72" for the standard 60" opening, that might work. But we designers like to have lushly deep drapery pleats that would not dry out as rapidly as that 72" wide curtain would do. What experience do other designers have with custom extra long shower curtains?

Home Depot has amazing 200 - 300 glass doors with brushed nickel too, and Dream line has a gorgeous 1/2 door I am using with 14 foot ceiling, it looks great.
Shower curtains only have to be dry on the inside. Bed Bath has plastic liners and grommet curtains washable with round d wring that look great tney would work perfect.
And, my new shower has no door and 0 threshold, just glass sides and back tile with smaller tile floor one via t rain shower and waterfall over back glass accent. Think different.
You can also buy two shower curtain, top white, bottom, 4feet navy red green whatever and you made your custom curtain. cool.

Carolyn, truthfully I thought I would never find the right fabric for the liner , but since I live close to the ocean, I was able to locate water resistant material that worked for a liner. I had my seamstress make it to specs w a simple tab top that would fit onto a tension rod. See lots of options for stores that carry longer liners too though, so that's nice to know.

Carolyn, if you research some of the links, there are 108" available! I have purchased 108" several times from Bed Bath & Beyond locally. I have also ordered online when unable to find locally! You could also try googling exact length you desire.

Since I've done this a number of times over the years, I suggest you consider rip stop nylon fabric for the liners. It seams quite well and even is machine washable. The last tall shower had a glass ceiling at 10' to 12' on the slope. One piece of insulated glass with tempered on top and laminated on bottom. The high shower head at 9' was a misting head. You just turned it on all hot and it was hot on the head and then changed to just a little warm by the time it hit your feet. A great experience while watching a thunder storm.
