Pruning crepe myrtles?

I know they're actually shrubs...

I'm in zone 7, Maryland USA. When (if I even should) should I prune my crepe myrtles? I'm not interested in making them into trees, I just mean tidying up and for better blooming. And if it's unnecessary, I'd still like to take some wood off because I make perches for my parrots with wood around the house. Safe wood of course.
