Boring Bedding

Hi, I just bought a beautiful ralph lauren quilt for my bed. It looks so boring and old lady like. I need help. Unfortunately I have ugly curtains that have to stay for now. That is why I went so neutral. Any ideas to jazz up the bedding? Thanks so much!

I'm with Bobbi P about pillow and throw. Your window treatment fabric reminds me of something I had in the early 90's. It looked good with a busy fabric. How about a great vintage chintzy fabric for pillows?

Would you suggest I go with cordinating colors with the wall or the curtains? Thats where I get lost. I appreciate your time and your input. Very helpful!

If you have no plans to keep the curtains permanently, why would you coordinate with them? I'm confused. It's a whole lot easier to change the curtains than the wall color; I would coordinate with the wall color, then when you change the curtains you can tie it all together. Hope that makes sense?

Yes it does make sense. I will coordinate with the wall color. Thanks!

I like the butterfly prints and suggest you use those as inspiration for throw pillows, bedside lamps and other accessories. I agree with Bobbi that if you don't plan to keep the curtains just go into denial about them as you decorate other elements in the room until you can change the window treatments.

I like the butterfly prints too, they're not baby or childish butterflies. Using those as inspiration is brilliant.

I think a set of cranberry, sage, or a pillows with a color similar to your wall color would look nice on the bed. I also like the butterfly prints, and think it would be a good idea to pull some colors from there. Just going by the looks of your room, it looks like you like neutral, calm colors, and aren't a "pattern-y" person. The room looks like a lovely, traditional-almost colonial- style bedroom, but they certainly don't have to be boring. You can definitely "punch" it up with some great accessories.
As for the curtains, I don't think they are ugly, personally, but I can understand if they don't fit your own taste. I hope you can pass them along to Goodwill or some place where another person could use them. They'd look good in somebody's "country" kitchen, IMO.

    Ooooh, cranberry, love that idea!

I agree, draw colours from the butterflies as suggested but can you enlarge those lampshades a tad? They seem so lost in the equation and what about a large area rug if you have the space that could spice up everything in a jiffy.

    Great ideas! thanks everyone!

Changing the lamps/shades is a great idea. If you can't invest in new ones, you could put a coat of paint on them for an extra punch. Or if you are going for a more traditional look, you could dress the lamp shades up with a bead or fringe trim. I like to use additional shams for extra color, too.

Great idea. I had a pair of silk lampshade in my basement and put them on, what a difference! I like the idea of bead or fringe trim too. Thanks

The curtains are just a valance right? If so take them off you have a shade and I would go with that and nothing else till you get new drapes or panels ...

The black butterfly frames do not look good with the mahogany bed frame nor the old-gold lamps: choose or repaint Butterfly frames in a gold that matches the lamp bases. The lamps you have are OK, but they might look nicer a bit beefier. Ralph Lauren often shows his bedding with a more casual flair. Fold down the spread to expose cranberry (as someone said) top and bottom sheets (or cranberry and white stripe sheets). Take down valence. A valence that matches wall color will be fine.

Tablecloths=inexpensive window Panels. They come in a variety of colors and are already hemmed. Use a basic rod and clip rings for an easy, cheap way to change your windows.

I would agree to use the butterfly prints as inspiration. If the window treatments are going to be replaced, remove then now and see what the room feels like. Bed Bath and Beyond have some great inexpensive window valances that would be great in a solid color to get you by until you can replace with a custom look. Add pillows and shams to complete the look and complement the butterfly artwork. Change the lamps on the nightstands to fit with the scale of the bed.
