plant donations?

My husband and I are about to discover the world of bamboo and would like to start a privacy grove on our property in se PA, zone 6--Coopersburg, actually. This would back up to a vinyl fence that's 6' tall and we could manage anything up to about 20' in height to block out a very intrusive neighbor. Lengthwise we're wanting to cover about 60' or more. We've contacted a nursery and will make a visit. Any advice out there on type of bamboo that we should seek? Does anyone have extra that they would like to get rid of....we would do all the labor, of course! Thanks for any help.

Phyllostachys aureosulcata, commonly call "Yellow Groove" is an excellent screening bamboo. Its also one that you are most likely to find locally in a "free bamboo- you dig" scenario which will give you the fastest results with starts exceeding 6ft in height.

If you want to order a bamboo, Phyllostachys bissetii or dwarf bisettii makes an excellent screening choice in colder climates.

If you go with small/short divisions from a nursery or elsewhere, my concern would be- and maybe others can clarify with this...
Would the bamboos be shaded out totally by the fence? Or, is bamboo tenacious enough to climb out of the shade?

I think all but maybe the dwarf bisettii will get a little taller than 20', but if you HAVE to stop there, top pruning is not unheard of.
