First Knautia bloom!

This is my only remaining Knautia macedonia that survived the winter from a total of 8 wintersown plants.

Pretty! You might want to move it, Vera...this plant gets quite large.

Ooh--looks lovely! I'm jealous! Tried WSing both macedonia and another two years now and have nothing. Also bought another pack of macedonia seeds again this year from T/M and have one lonely fuzzy flat weedy thing right in the middle of a cell that may or may not be the real thing.

Today I (again) pulled out the seed pack and decided to try the seeds on moist paper towel in a closed container--my version of the 'baggie seed starting method'. Also have Jack Flash silene and Amsonia tabernamontana to retry.

I need the zing of the reds! [Yes, I know that Amsonia is blue.]

Can you give me a close-up of the basal foilage?

    Thanks!

Webkat....how big is big? As it is now it's surrounded by only annuals in a 3' diameter at least with the exception of that small patch of sedum which I've planned to move.

hoehum....I get a pic of the basal foliage in the morning :D

Very nice picture, Vera. Love the punch of the red. I have not tried that plant either from seed or starter plant but looks like it should be in my garden. Is that love in a mist behind it? I definately want that one next year. Does it winter sow? I love your pictures.

    Hi Bonny,

Yes that is Nigella (Love-in-the-Mist) and I've only had to wintersow just once.... They self-sow really well and I usually just collect the seed pods and sprinkle wherever I want them to come up....very easy.

I have mine in the back of my garden, and they are pushing 5 feet right now. Pretty...flowers are small compared to neighboring plants, but I like them. They tend to be leaning over...not quite falling over, so it's good that there are other plants nearby to hold them upright.
Mine are 2006 winter-sown ones. They didn't bloom last year at all.

Holy *hit mm....5' tall!? Then oh yes I'll be having to move it...I guess after I pull up the lunaria that's in the corner of a bed next to the Joe Pye I can put it there. It would be 4' away from the JPW so I can manage not to over-water it.

It's very rich, screened loam back there that we had to fill in when the ground settled after we built the house. If that makes a difference at all.

My naughties are only about 3 feet tall or less. I have them in full sun out by the street in a drought bed. They re-seed for me and I send seed to noobs each year. I just cut mine back for a re-bloom.

    Hey Vera,
My Knautia "Macedonia" is blooming too. I was a little disappointed that it's so freakin' pink, but, it still is nice. I have it in the black and white garden, but I think I'm going to have to move it-- since it ain't black and it ain't white...lol.

3' was what I was expecting! Ok....the bed is kept on the dry side so that's good LOL! The perennials near by are some Blue Sea Holly seedlings, Yarrow, Gaillardia, Echinacea angustifolia, Saponaria, Sedum and Daylily.

Well was just going thru my perennial guide books and two of them list Knautia macedonica, one of 40 species of Knautia, as only growing 2-3' tall...

3 - 4 ft for me, Vera. They reseed like mad. The plant is best standing alone to show off its beautiful form, so you may want to allow a bit of space around it.
    Congrats. :-)

I'll remember that next year pit! Doesn't seem to have much form this year; I assume this is one of those 3rd year leap plants :D
Hoehum I'm still getting that pic for you....I spaced it yesterday.
