Yes, a gray fox. I've seen them occasionally in the desert surrounding Fountain Hills. Difficult to distinguish from coyotes beyond about 100'.

Love fox. I'm actually a member of a fox hunting group in Flagstaff. Not many foxes but we also hunt coyote and, on occasion, mountain lion.
We also have a beagle group that hunts jack rabbit. We don't kill anything and it's all about the hounds and wildlife.
Fox hunters are all huge wildlife proponents.
I think we really only have gray fox here. I've never seen a red in this state.
Unfortunately, red fox numbers are decreasing all over the US, due to the spread of coyotes.

Tracy - You must be a fan of Rita Mae Brown's mystery books then. I've read all her Sneaky Pie cat books where she often included fox hunting in Virginia. They don't kill the foxes either. Seems more of a riding, jumping, social and eating affair. Just starting now on her fox hunting mysteries.
