Backyard Suggestions?

I've got a 1500 sq. foot (25x60) backyard that has virtually nothing going for it right now. It's mostly dirt and a little bit of grass - very little. I would love some shade for the back of the house as well, as our back neighbor has no trees. So during the heat of the day, there's no shade helping to keep the house cool. Was thinking of just turning it into a small grove.

Any suggestions on varieties that can stand a few hours of sun during the heat f the day? North Houston area. Should i go with one type in a yard my size or is 25x60 enough room for two or more?

At my parents' old house they let me plant a bamboo a long time ago but i have no idea what it was, and the culms were only about .5"-.75". It was a runner but stayed contained pretty well in a 30gallon put planted in the ground.

I'd rather have something a bit bigger culm diameter.

Next question, after selecting the variety, is where are some good places to buy? Seems like the mail order places only sell with like 1-3 sticks for $30-$50. How long would it take such a small size to become more than just a couple sticks?

Thanks,

Daniel
