Hey there, Pat. Wait for the seed pod to start to brown up. Once it does, keep an eye on it and then pluck it once it starts to split. I pop the seeds out of the casing and let them "air out" and dry a day or 2. You can usually see or feel the embryo seed inside the paper casing. Float them in covered plastic dish with water and a couple drops of peroxide. Plant when you see roots sprouting. I usually store seeds in paper envelopes until I plant or share with others. I find plastic can sometimes cause moisture build up and mold. Good Luck, buddy!!!

I agree with Cindee... wait until you see the seed pod begin to split open slightly... it's then that harvesting can take place. I cut the pods off the scapes and allow them to dry for a few days before planting any of the seeds.

You can hold the seeds up to a light source, one by one, and check for embryos... you'll see a little bump or squiggle inside the seed sheath... this is the embryo. Seeds with embryos can be planted either in soil, or germinated using the flotation method Cindee describes above. I've had success sprouting seeds using this method.
