I've been tempted, but it would have to come inside in the winter, since it's only listed as hardy to 32 deg F. I have a B. multiplex 'Alphonse Karr' (hardy to 18 deg F), and I neglected to bring it inside when a 15 deg F cold snap hit...I lost all the leaves and part of most culms. It did come back this summer, but it was a close call. In fact, when it finally put out leaves, they were pure white for about a month until the plant decided it was safe!
I guess it would be hard to bring a 50 foot plant inside...at least in my home :) I have thought about trying out Alphonse Karr also but was worried about the cold (I take it yours was in a pot?). Hey, did you get my email? K.
I have seeds of D. asper 'bentung hitam' that are germinating. From what I can see, at least half are sprouting after only 3 days. I'll be happy to care for the little seedlings... at least for a while! Then I'll have to find someplace warm.
Ah, that's the big Black asper, right? I have seen those on ebay and the pictures look very cool. I wonder if growing them indoors would work as a container should stunt their growth a bit. K.
Madake- Yeah...I guess I was thinking small. My Alphonse Karr is small...about 7'-8', and in a big pot and I have a couple of rooms with double height ceilings, so I'll be ok for a few years. As for the email, I'm drawing a blank. Please try again...that's a valid email address.
Ok, I think the issue with the email is I tried to post it vie the gardenweb's email post. I will send one the normal way. All my bamboo (only 3 types) are still in large pots as I am re-landscaping my yard and hope to get them in the ground before winter.... if we have a real winter this year.
