Its roots are not invasive, I believe they are of little threat to underground plumbing. Much less so that trees. Bamboo doesn't grow the fine root hairs that can work their way into pipes.
However, their rhizomes are quite invasive and will wander extensively, which will likely cause it to grow in places you had not intended. Control methods are available.

The simplest control method is rhizome pruning. Most bamboo rhizomes are pretty close to the surface. If you use a sharp shovel and chop down all along the perimeter you want to maintain, it will zap any wayward roots that are going where you don't want them. The roots that extend past the cut line can't maintain themselves and will shrivel and die. This should be done once or twice in the late fall each year.

Rhizome prune in late Fall? Do you mean like December? Wouldn't October be better, or do the rhizomes keep growing thru Oct and November? When is it that they stop growing in the PNW?
I have a Bory that needs this done pretty soon. Although I keep toying with the notion of letting it take over half of the south side of my house which would give some needed shade to the house. But I would have to cut out a tree that I like and I also think it would make the house more difficult to sell. But it would be awesome, I know that Bory would grown to great heights in that area.

I have had 2 groves of black for plus 8 years. Here are my observations: gophers love the roots, the rhizomes will do anything and everything to get to water. I had a rhizome jump my barrier and run 9 ft into my lawn. Saw a place in Santa Cruz where black ran under a fence to get into a neighbors yard where he ran sprinklers. The rhizomes on black are like steel and run very deep. I found roots 3 ft down when I put in a barrier. Rgds
