Try some Yushania alpina. Now that's a bamboo. Nothing puny about this bamboo, it's very large and should grow in your area.

Y. maculata is a nice bamboo of reasonable size. Graceful with a fountain like habit. The specimen I have has about 25 closely spaced culms.

Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie, do you have a picture of it? Thanks for the info.

The above websites should be without the quotation(") marks at the end of each string.

You'll have to cut and paste and they should read as follows:

Kt: thanks....DO you have the alpina? Tradewinds is out of stock on it.

Gib says: hard to grow in U.S. , except in coastal zone on west coast. Won't make it by me...Yushania alpina.

Darn it, I wanted to have gorillas and elephants roaming the groves...

No, I don't have it but it's on my want list. They are always out when I'm ready to order.

Look at these pictures:

Its been a fairly slow grower (7' high) for me and shoots in mid-summer.

Mike, it's hard to believe you got any slow growers out there in Bamboo paradise...Do you ever have any tours going there?

The last tours visiting my garden were the Southeast Chapter of ABS and The Southeastern Palm Society, both visited several years ago.

Mike, Was your garden ever on TV? I remember on the HGTV channel awhile ago I saw on Erica Glassner's show A Gardener's Diary an episode of a bamboo garden in South Carolina I think.

Pat - No go on my sources. Good Luck. Rgds

Thanks anyway Fred...I spoke to someone who may have some in spring for me..if not it'll take 2 years before this other place can get it for me...

My garden has never been on TV. A professional photographer visited here once, but he was mostly interested in my Australian plant collection.
