Problem: Need Suggestions

My grove of Moso bamboo beside my kitchen window faces east and is between our farm fish pond and home. Every year it tends to shoot early (in a warm spring it can shoot as early as March 3rd) and then we get a late frost and I lose 3/4 of those giant culms. Any suggestions as to how to keep the ground cool enough that it won't want to shoot so early? TIA

I would suggest watering, then covering the new shoots with a tarp when the cold returns, then uncover quickly as the day warms up.

A mild frost shouldn't hurt them. How cold does it get?

I've had the same thing happen the last two years, We had 75+ deg for a week and Easter morning it got down to 17 deg two nights in a row. My culms some 6 foot high folded over. Last year only got down to 30 Easter also. some got damaged but most survived. I am going to try placing a barrel full of burning charcoal next to them this year.
