I just planted some a few months back -- it's doing very well.

While researching it I read that you can buy sugar cane at the grocer. Cut it into 1' sections and put each section in the ground. I'm told it will root and grow just fine.

I purchased this plant already rooted.

I'm thrilled the stalks look as cool as they do I hadn't expected that.

Here is a link that might be useful: close up of sugar cane plant

I got my original starts off the roadside in Louisiana during harvest season.

After a few days, I finally planted them. I buried the whole stalk with the top end sticking out of the ground. Keep the soil moist at all times. In the Spring, it began to grow.

If you cut it into sections, I would leave two nodes per section, as this is where the roots and new top growth will come from.

Good Luck

Wow, that is so cool! I didn't know they rooted so easily! I'll have to keep my eyeballs peeled for sugar cane at the grocery store...or maybe I'll try ebay.

I have the reddish-black sugar cane Pele's smoke. Cane is reddish-black, leaves deep green with a pink midrib. It roots easily, I have many starts. Very colorful, very easy to grow. I have never seen that type in the store, but have seen the green, let me know if toy want the black. I have sold it on ebay before & have seen the regular green form there also.

Yeah that's pretty cool....

Another thing you can easily grow from the grocery store is horseradish... I bought a nice siced root for like $4 and cut it up into about 5 peices and got five healthy plants. YOu can put the horse in the ground now and expect spruts in the spring.

I would love to try the sugar cane too!
