Hi pokerguard!! A great idea, however, it almost looks like you are there already! I have ten grapevines in my gardens, and they are such good growers, I wouldn't be surprised if you get a LOT of growth on them next year.

Correct me here, but yours look like maybe two year old plants? That's where most of mine were last year. I cut them back significantly while they were dormant, and trained only the strongest cane(s) up some eight foot posts on my pergola. This year, when they came out of dormancy (and don't worry if they seem like they won't because they will) they exploded! The old canes have doubled in thickness, and the new canes all grew another eight feet. Long spurs just cascading down all over the place in huge jumbles. I try to train them up and over through the pergola, but they sometimes have their own ideas, which I'm respectful of.

You can and should cut them back this winter. Guides say up to 90% of the wood should be cut back to ensure the largest and strongest growth and crops. I would only caution that, at least on your first one, those curves you've got going on towards the bottom might be less than acquiescent - so you may not get the perfect look on the pic above.

Also, the first pic you have has a middle tier in it. In some philosophies, you give that level up and train only to the top wire once the plant can reach it, which yours obviously can get to.

Not to change the subject of the thread, but I so wish I could post pics like you have. I just seem to be missing something. I went into the test forum, and used pics I posted in Picasa and in Flickr. I got the part of the HTML down pat, setting the image tags, but I couldn't get pics from either site to embed... I may need a lesson from you, what's your secret????
