I just started some pansy seeds and have sprouts now. I've grown pansies all winter here.

Snapdragons I don't know because I've never grown them, but do you think it would be okay for me to get some seeds off the dead snaps in the planter at my doctor's office? Poor snaps bit the dust, but it looks like there are seeds on them.

liz: You can WS in summer. I'd keep the containers in full shade to prevent drying and/or overheating. Extra vent holes might help, too.

I have had both snapdragons (wintersown) and pansies (not WSown) overwinter in my zone 6 yard.

So it sounds like I should find some seeds now. I thought the cascading snapdragons would like nice on a fence rail planter. I almost bought some online last night, but the 40 cent per seed price stopped me! Since these are hybrids, I assume I won't be able to find in a trade.

As for the sowing itself - I think I'll keep the container inside until it gets a bit cooler outside. I'm not sure I could keep it from drying out.

Liz: I don't know how well the snaps perform over winter in a container. Mine have been in the ground. But then, you are in a much warmer area than me so they might be fine.

Karen - that's a good point. I'll check over on the Texas forum. Fortunately there are a lot of people there from my area.

Liz, Another option would be to plant them in the ground for the winter, then transplant to pots in the spring. Just about everything does better for me in ground than in containers, no matter what season.
