Aww, what a pretty little thing!

Karen

:D I'm so glad to see it 2x now. I was wondering the other night what it was. She moved like a hummingbird but all I was seeing was a silhouette. Last night, I saw it again. However, there were 2. :)

It's hard to capture since it's dark and she jumps from one flower to another flower so quickly. Do they sting?

Hi Niel, no, they don't sting, and they only come out at night.
If I remember right, some one correct me if I am wrong, please.
They come from the tomato worm, who will burrow down into the ground, and come out as this beauty.
They are every bit as fun to watch as a humming bird, thus, the name,Humming Bird Moth.

That is kewl one! Its always a treat so see them.

I can never get a photo, tho.

:)

When I first got my digital camera, I saw one for the first time. He was so intent on the nectar of the lily, I must have taken over a dozen pictures of him.

Clearwing Hummingbird Moth

It's a different moth from the tomato hornworm, although tomatoes are one of the host plants. We're just starting to see the caterpillars on the ground here looking for places to burrow into for the season. If I see them trucking along the sidewalk, I take them to a wooded area so they can burrow into the leaf mold and/or soil.

Although both are known as Hummingbird Moths, the Clearwing will be seen during the day while the other will make an appearance in the evening as it is getting dark. I've had both this year and they are great!!

Thanks for all the information everyone! I'm thinking of turning on the lights outside now, go out, and monitor some movement. :)
