It grows well here. My dad's friend had a small plot of it in Chandler .

Yes it does grow here, I had some for years, but it finally all died out last year. It's worth a try at least! Just needs plenty of water and frost protection (but it does come out after a nominal freeze).

Many thanks! There are long stalks for sale at Food city in Casa Grande, so I will get some and try to root cuttings indoors, to plant out in late winter. Just as attractive as bamboo.
Also, there is a giant grass that gets to 11' high, and I have some in Canada, but have not seen it here. It is stunning, a clumping grass with interesting flowers. If anyone knows where I can get this locally, please let me know.

Thanks for all the helpful information. I have my cuttings now, cut with 2 growing rings each. I guess I have to lay them flat and cover them completely and with plastic and keep warm for less than a month and they should have sprouts. Will give updates as they grow. Also I was told that the tops of the canes grow better than the lower parts, so I chose the skinny ones, hoping that they are tops, not bottoms.

I've been growing Sugar Cane for a while. Sometimes it makes it through the winter sometimes it doesn't. It depends on the microclimate in winter where it is in your yard. They grow so quick and easy that you can just plant every spring. You can also buy different varieties pretty cheap on ebay.

I am a happy camper! My sugar cane has sprouted! Only 14 days! Surprising too, as the cane was older and a bit dry and the growing shoots looking a little beat up. Now to repot and put them under grow lights until maybe mid February? Thanks for the help everyone.

Do they have to be harvested before the cold weather? what if I left them for ornamental purpose, and they die back from the cold weather, will they sprout back up in the spring time?
