    The strips are aluminum drip caps.. This is done to ensure that if moisture gets trapped behind the siding, it can be channeled and evaporate.

    Another option you could use for drip caps is copper. They add a nice profile to the window headers. Some people appreciate that as copper ages and oxidizes it turns green, some people do not. The aluminum will hold its color longer, but like most things it will fade with prolonged UV exposure.
