They should be perfect candidates for winter sowing.
Squash the berries, wash the seed (pulp will contain germination inhibitors)

Surface sow or barely cover. sow 3 months @ 39F, move to warmer for germination.

Just about like mother nature would do it outside over winter and spring. Be patient, Druse (Making More Plants) suggests germination in 40-180 days and that would be after the chill.

is this the case for most berries? I just received elderberries, nanny berries, and an unnamed wild berry (edible) I was hoping to wintersow the lot. Are all berries similar or do I need to look each of them up?

MARY

Thank you for all of the good advice Morz8!

Mary, better to look them up and not assume. Sambucus/elderberry, best with 2 months @ 68F, followed by 4 months @ 39F...top your pot with some grit (moss, algae prevention) because this one may take more than one winter to germinate. Druse says germination outdoors 'first or second Spring'.
Viburnum lentago/nanny berry, sow 5 months to 9 months @ 68ºF night and 86ºF daytime temps, then 2 months to 4 months @ 39ºF, recycle. (Yikes, I couldn't provide those warm daytime temps, even with bottom heat. They would have to go outside sown when ripe and with my fingers crossed. Keep in mind the database suggestions are for methods that have proven to work, not necessarily that they are the only way to get at least some germination)

Seeds from any fruit/berry should be cleaned of the pulp. If you don't know the name of a berry, think about how it performs in the wild, what time of year the ripe berry would fall to the ground, what temperatures and conditions it would be exposed to, and let that be your guide.

pyracantha is so easy to propagate from cuttings, thereby insuring a true clone of your plant, I would not bother with growing it from seed which could have bad traits. A lot of varities of pyracantha have had some resistence to fire blight bread into them which would make them far better plants to have than a random seedling which would probably suffer from fire blight.

ncdirtdigger it sounds like you know alot about these Pyracantha. I have never heard of fire blight. This is my first Pyracantha. It is Northern Beauty Pyracantha. I do not see any patent info on the tag. So it should be ok to clone?
