Think I found another source for WS

I used up my last container of Crystal Light tea tonight and I'm looking at that container and wondering why I couldn't use that for a WS container? It's not exactly clear but neither are the milk jugs..What do you all think?

While in Target's snack aisle..I saw a Slim Jim can..and was wondering what that can looked like under all that outside wrapper? I don't eat sj so don't know about the product. Thinking could it be used for WS?

Crystal light tube would be fine. Just poke holes in top and bottom.

I've used Crystal Light tubes in the past. Yup, they work great!

The other day when I stopped into the grocery store, I found myself going down certain aisles to check to see if there were other products that I used or could use if they had a container that could be used for WS..this has become an obsession and I haven't planted my first seed yet! LOL! I dropped off some food to a friend on my way home from a party and spied a gal. milk jug in their recyle bin and asked if I could have it and briefly told him about WS. His wife grows a pretty good size patch of tomatoes every summer. Will have to tell her how to WS.

I went to put the empty milk jugs in the garage that I've gathered so far and I see a container of windshield washer fluid. Of course, it is half full so I will not be getting that for another year probably. So if you are visiting your local gas station or local car repair garage, snoop for their recycle can or ask what they do with their empties. The one that we have can be used for WS. It is a clear, plastic jug.
Who would have thought of that source? Amazing detective work. LOL!

For WS food plants, only food-safe containers should be used. Never grow foodstuffs in containers that held winshield wiper fluids or other auto-related items. It's not safe for you or your kids....

Just wanted to say that I am enjoying "watchiing" newer WSers go through the "container hunting" stage of development! You will never go down the aisle of a grocery store in the same way again. You will pick up products you'd never eat or use because THAT's a great container!!! You will also have to make choices - - "Hmmmm, do I want a really really big clear plastic box container of spinach or this similarly sized one of cookies?" the cookies always win for me!!!! I LOVE the clear box of any kind for WSing as the lids are easy to take off.

Reached my hand out to close the side door on the garage when I got home from work this afternoon. There was a clear plastic 2 liter seltzer bottle on the floor behind the door. Forgot my purse, forgot the laptop and the tote bag I was carrying, forgot my commuter mug and made a grab for the bottle. It's okay--I didn't drop it and the bottle now has nice round holes in the bottom and is cut neatly through to make container #54. Oh yeah, the rest of my stuff made it inside too. I even cruised the cafeteria at the office just to see if I spotted any promising WS candidates.

Food Lion here sells brownies in a great wintersowing container. The brownies aren't bad either.

Was reaching for the leftovers from the last few days to warm up for dinner tonight. I discovred there was a clear, plastic container with celery sticks that was purchased in the grocery store a few weeks ago with intention on using them when I make tuna fish up. Both the 3 oz. can of tuna and these celery sticks got pushed to the back of refrigerator, and forgotten until tonight. I drained the water off the celery and laid it out on paper towel to dry. It wasn't as crisp sitting in that water as it was when they were probably put in there but I'll probably throw most of it out anyway..but not the container. It is 5 inches tall. WhooHoo! Enough for holding soil for seeds. Will punch hole in clear top and bottom for drainage and circulation and light. Look around in your produce section and you might find fresh fruit put up in these same containers. I know they put fresh pineapple in them, as well as watermelon. I don't know if they come like that or the produce dept. makes them up but think they are shipped to store like that. Sometimes the stores will sell you containers like this. Our women's church group was able to buy this size and larger for homemade soup that they sold to raise money for their mission project or for their scholorship fund. I kept two from my soup I bought about 2 yrs. ago so they will be put to use for WS too. I know these don't take the place of gallon jugs or 2 liter bottles but when you don't have those, you implement with something else.

I'm starting for the first time this year and convinced one of the soda vendors at the store I work at to let me have some of the trays they deliver the 2L bottles of soda in. Holds 8 bottles so my stuff shouldn't blow over and I'll be able to move them a bit easier:)

Those 2L hholders are great! A few years back I was driving past a clothing drop box that had become quite a dumping ground & outside the box were a dozen of them which I "tidied up"-just to make the place look better! (right!) They keep the bottles in place & are also super easy to put in a tray of water to water the sprouts from the bottom.

An ad for cookie dough just popped up and in it showed the tub of chocolate chip cookie dough that is in probably a 2 or 3 lb. tub. My mind started thinking what a great WS container that could make. Cut the middle out of the lid and add plastic wrap or painter's drop cloth plastic to let in light. You get to enjoy the cookies too!

This is my first year WS and I'm very exited about it. I've planted 8 containers so far. I used milk jugs the plastic coffee "cans" that coffee comes in now. Cut the tops as usual and insert plastic wrap. I also intend to us the tin cans my canned meat and veggies come in. You already have the tops cut off. Just wash them and punch holes in the bottoms with a punch or screw driver. Cover them individually with plastic or line them up and cover a bunch with a bag or piece of heavy plastic. This should work well with the larger seeds or for plants you only want a few of. Why send them to the dump until they are too rusty to use for WS?
