Lots of us freeze pollen

Hi everyone

I just wrap the pollen in a bit of foil and place it in a small envelope with the details written on it. This is then put into an air tight screw top jar and into the freezer.

I have used two year old pollen from the freezer with good results using this method. Just remember, once it's thawed out you have to use it immediately and you can't re-freeze it.

Just for the record - I have stored Neo. seed in a similar method and found it still viable after three years.

I think it depends on your species. If you are working with Arabidopsis thaliana, frozen pollen doesn't work!

I am fairly skeptical about 2 yr old pollen still being viable. Do you know you didn't get some other random pollination?

Hotdiggetydam how do you collect the pollen to freeze?
And Nev, do you shake or brush the pollen onto the foil, or clip off the stamens onto the foil or something else?

And Juno_barks I'm just talking about bromeliad species here, and Billbergias in particular...
