A picture of You-Know-Who? Just kidding. It looks like everything is pushed to the left side of the room. There's several plants and stands, 2 chairs, 2 prints, a large lamp and table and the bookcases.

I would try removing the plants, lamp, and prints. If you need a lamp on that side, try something smaller or more streamlined; something with a glass base. Try moving the 2 prints over the TV for better balance if your new stand will accomodate that. Can you find a new home for the plants? I also would leave nothing on the mantle, just the pictures are fine. I like your sofa!

Everything in your room has a very formal feel. I am not seeing the contemporary twist. If you desire a more modern look, I would suggest updating your very traditional accessories...the brass urn lamp, birdcage, tapestry, drapes with sheers.

Great ideas, this is exactly what I needed. Bobbi, no Voldemort, but there is a kilted man on the wall not shown, lol. next to the wall on the other side of the room is a large opening into a dinning room and that helps...but I see your point now that you mentioned it. Love your ideas. Mich...your right, I guess it isn't very contemporary. I think because there are not a great deal of nick knacks I thought it was. Certainly taking your advice.

I agree, I love the couch and chairs! It's your accesories that could use the update. Plus I feel like a great new area rug will help you define that space and give you more options for furniture placement instead of all to the left. I'm also thinking maybe a new paint color on the walls. The mustard yellow???? Is making it a bit.... blah. Your eye doesn't grab onto anything. And your couch is definitely an eye catcher! Everything just seems to blend.

I agree too with the suggestions for area rug and brighter color on the walls. I like the brick fireplace.

Wall color?

I'm not a fan of the stained crown molding. Painting it white or the same color as the wall might lift the perceived ceiling height a bit. Also, the art on the walls seems too lightweight. I think darker, bolder frames would be better -- especially with mauve-y looking prints in them.

Love the couch...I agree with above comments regarding the addition of an area rug and a change up with the wall color. Some reflective accessories as well would add some punch...lamps etc. I would also consider new window treatments.

The place is beautiful, and I love the chesterfield sofa, I have been looking for one for a long time. Anyway, if you want a change, I would add more lighting, bright colored pillows on the sofa and I'd exchange the small art for bigger pieces instead of pairs.

HI- I'm thinking a medium grayish painted fireplace with mounting the tv over the fireplace and using bookshelves on both sides of the fireplace in a lighter color. A contemporary colorful rug would be great, or a stripe.

Great sofa! If you want a more contemporary feel I agree with the suggestions above: a light area rug, more streamlined table lamp, bright pillows, repurpose the plants to another location, and either 1 long painting above the fireplace using the same colors as the pillows or something that has reflective properties to it...not necessarily a mirror. You might want to consider a mantel that has a little more substance to it although don't make your mantel higher than it already is. Let us know what you decide to do!

I've been watching old episodes of "Upstairs Downstairs" on Netflix and they have made a lovely "morning" room around a sofa much like yours. Interestingly, walls in that room are a dusty purple, FP is black and lots of greens are used. I find it lovely and a very soothing. Check it out for some clues you might use, even though it is Victorian. I could see it translated into contemporary, but I don' t really think that is your style, based on the furnishings I am seeing in your pics. Definitely see your fp wall as a complete build-in to house tv and to decorate with books and accessories.

I love the new couch. One thing if you are deciding on new drapes; what is on the other side. Do you need the sheers? Otherwise I would choose a solid color without the sheers if you have a good view. I love seeing clearly what is outside of my home; very uplifting. I agree with the person that said a large picture on the mantle would be better than the two and then the other items on the mantle would be better. Or, a lot of modern homes are mounting the TV above the mantle. I would change the color of the wall because it is too close to the floor color and can be monotonous. I would do a light ivory or something with a light brown but bring home paint samples to make sure it does not clash with the brown of the couch. Emphasize on light though.

I love high definition photography in a room because it is mood lifting and takes your mind to places you have been or may want to go. You can use it for a pop of color on the walls although some people prefer black or white. I personally like large ones and have a lighthouse in my family room (Tybee Island) but sometimes smaller ones of one theme can be a good idea as well. You are lucky to have such a nice bookcase. I would reorganize it and put books of one color in one place. That may make it more aesthetically pleasing. You can try it; but most of us live in homes that look lived in don't we! I certainly would have to restage my home for company or if I was selling. Have a great day!

Just read the other comments and I think the tall plant would look great beside your desk and stair case and once you have new art for the living room you can take the pictures currently in the room and hang on the wall leading upstairs in a cool collage. I would look for another coffee table that isn't so square and totally get a funky rug in there! Shift everything over a little, the chairs don't need to be so close to that wall, if space allows. Have fun!

This has been the best. Waiting for mom to visit and try out all the new ideas. Especially love the mantle ideas. I loved the tables when I bought them, but I agree with you Emma and besquared...may have to tighten the budget and buy new tables too!

I think what you can use is a nice rug under the center table. You can either go with a faded out rug or a more tribal rug, depending on what appeals to you more. However, I would recommend a tribal more geometric rug. It will blend in the colors and add warmth to the room as well.
