Hi Linda, I don't think the morning sun is to blame. That first photo shows marks / scratches on a couple of leaves at about the same place...not sure about this, but my guess is that a stone or something got into the cup of the plant a few months ago, caused a little damage to the developing leaves, and now as they have grown out, that damage has become evident.

The second photo...a small Alcantarea...? These are often attacked by slugs and snails. It is usually the ends of the leaves on these small Alcantarea that they have a taste for. Here are a couple of mine with similar damage. I find that as the plants mature, they suffer less damage from these little pests.

Thanks for that, We do have a quite a few snails but on the other side of the garden (veggies patch), but I never noticed them before around my bromeliads.

I will have to remove them all before my 3 year old daughter sees me as she loves to collects them even calling them her friends.
