What to plant under sweet gum tree

I am a gardening novice and and would love some advice on what to plant under my large sweet gum tree. I live in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains in La Crescenta, Los Angeles County. I currently have clivia under the tree but sadly these all died in the recent frost. The spot gets some sun in the winter when the tree is bare, but for most of the year it has dappled shade. I am looking for some plants that are easy to maintain. Any advice appreciated! Regards, Katy.

I would have that tree taken out and put something else in.
But seriously since that can't really be done get a Western
Garden Book and look for things that can be planted under oaks. The book lists things like that. You really just need shade lovers. Since Descanso Gardens is right in your city go there and you'll gets lots of ideas and advice.
For winter color you might be able to do cyclamens or even pansies. Also is the area irrigated? How tall do you want your new plants to get?

Don't give up on your Clivia. I have seen them frosted to the ground in a bad year and return quickly from the roots in the next year. Al
