When is the Best Time to Feed?

I have several Camellias in my back yard, and for the most part the ones under the pine trees are healthy and bloom. There are some on the other side of the yard which get lots of new growth every year but dont set buds (or very few). I never have fed any of them, but if I did, what is the best time of year to do so?

March 15 (the Ides of March) would be a good target date, just before they start their strong spring growth, with a slow release fertilizer. Cotton seed meal is preferred by many camellia growers, or a camellia/azalea fertilizer. On the ones that are growing strong, I would leave off any fertilizer and see what happens, unless you are wanting to push the foliage growth. The stronger they are growing, the less they tend to bud. Then spare the fertilizer for the remainder of the year.

After you sample your soil and have it tested. Lack of nutrients may not be the problem at all.
