Something is eating my camellia buds!

I have one precious camellia, given to me by my sister for my 60th birthday. It seems very happy, and formed 30 buds last Autumn. Now most of these have been eaten from the tip in and have gone brown. No damage to the leaves. It is under cover, in a pot on a concrete floor so I can't think it is slugs or snails as surely they would eat the leaves as well? Any ideas anyone? It is not closed in as the lean-to is open to the South, but does have a roof.
Be glad to hear from anyone.
