When to cut back overgrown camillia

I have a very old overgrown professor sargent in the front yard that has not been cut back for a number of years. It needs to be cut way back. Generally I've cut them back after they have bloomed but since it has to be cut so drastically I don't want to kill it so just to make sure could someone please advise as to the for sure proper time to do this.If I've waited too long I'll wait until next year. thanks so much! ds
