Sasanquas can tolerate the shade, but obviously won't bloom for as long a time as you'd like. They're more popular for hedges because they grow faster, tolerate sun and shade, and have smaller (more hedge-like?) leaves.

That said, I think a row of japonicas will look quite nice, and hopefully, 'Brushfield's Yellow' will look very nice with your daffodils. If you haven't seen the flower in person, you might want to do so, however- some of the so-called yellow camellias look better in photos than in real life.

You have some great camellia nurseries in Oz, and I checked Camellia Grove's web site for info about 'BY'- they say bloom time is mid-April to early September. Growth is medium and upright, so nothing unusual there.

I haven't grown that variety myself, but you should be able to get in touch with someone at the nursery you plan to buy from for specifics. Or you could contact your local or national camellia society.

As for pruning, I think either approach will work, but the gradual pruning for bushier growth sounds like it might get you where you want to be sooner. But if you get busy with something else and neglect the pruning, you should be able to catch up later on...

Vmr- I somehow missed your reply! As you know from the roses forum, I went ahead and planted the hedge :) I won't bother posting photos because you can't even see the tiny little things amongst all the weeds! I'm sure it will look great one day though.

It will be beautiful. Camellias take a more patience than most roses, but in a way that makes it even better when they start to mature and give some bones to your garden.
