If the root ball area of camellia is moist, do not water it. Camellia hates wet feet. If the planting area has too much sun or the local soil is not acidic, the leaves tends to turn slowly to lighter color and sick appearance. There is no conflict on blooming time. Camellia flowers in late Feb to March.

Maintain both the hydrangea and camellia evenly moist and well mulched. Both require about 3-4" of mulch up to the drip line (or past the drip line if the area is windy). You should water them when the soil feels almost dry or dry to the touch. Insert a finger into the soil to a depth of 4" and see how it feels. Check daily for about 2 weeks and note the days when you water in a wall calendar. After two weeks, determine how often you water. Then set your sprinkler or drip irrigation to apply 1 gallon of water on the same frequency (50% more if your soil is sandy). If the temps change 10-15 degrees and stay there, check again with the finger method.

Do not overwater as both shrubs can develop root rot if the roots stay wet for long periods of time.

I don't think that an irrigation cycle is required to water a handful of shrubs. A three gallon camellia can be hand watered in less than one minute.

You may find that your new plants require fairly frequent watering this first season, especially as your Texas summer approaches. How often depends upon your soil type, how much rainfall you receive, how deeply you water, drainage at the site, etc. Good for you for understanding that you need to water right at the root ball. Don't over water, by which I mean that you shouldn't water when they don't need it (too often). Always give the plants plenty of water when they need it. Taper off on the watering gradually as fall approaches.

Maintain a mulch layer of 2-3 inches, but don't pile it up against the trunk. Please know that your mulch will be the happy recipient of quite a bit of the water you apply, so water long enough to get through the mulch and into the soil.

Your sasanqua Camellia will probably bloom in October or November. Enjoy!
