Camellias tend to grow from several stems but it may take time to get additional stems. If this variety tends to grow into a columnar growth habit, I am not sure you can do much to make it spread. You could try pinching when the leaves are about to leaf out but I have not heard of this working with camellias.

My main question is when and how to prune camelias. I currently have two, both were planted as part of the foundation planting when our house was built 13 years ago. Even with their age they are small - about 3 feet tall and bushy. One is growing on the south side of my house, getting full sun most of the day and the one on the north side of the house gets very little direct sun during the day. Both have small dark glossy leaves and pink flowers. They both seem to be doing well but each has a number of branches that have "shot out" beyond the main bush about two feet in numerous directions. I want to make sure that
1) I should cut those branches back at all
2) If so, I want to do the pruning so as to minimize the impact on flowering
3) What other objectives should I consider when cutting them back.

Also, I obviously know very little about camelias. Is there a website where I can learn the basics? One more question, I'm redoing some of the foundation planting around my house at this time. Should I plant more camellias and, if so, where and what kind?
